Saint John Of Las Vegas - Review

Steve Buscemi isn’t a betting man, but he took a chance on a first time writer/director to step out of the character actor  realm and take a starring role in Saint John of Las Vegas. It’s far from a masterpiece, but Hue Rhodes manages to do Buscemi justice providing him with a character ripe with emotion and a fascinating complexity. Buscemi returns the favor by powering the film with an engaging oddity.

John (Steve Buscemi) is down on his luck, big time. He flees Las Vegas in an effort to ditch a gambling addiction and get a fresh start. He gets himself a nice home in a quaint neighborhood and a good job working for an auto insurance company. His new innocuous existence is disturbed when his boss, Mr. Townsend   (Peter Dinklage), decides to pair him up with the company’s top fraud investigator, Virgil (Romany Malco), to investigate a suspect claim. If he performs well, John could be promoted to a level six adjuster. The only problem is, the location of the assignment is John’s old stomping ground, Las Vegas.

John is a complex character. He’s an average man just trying to make a living, but he’s also a guy battling an intense demon, gambling. After pushing the blackjack tables and roulette chips aside, he finds solace in the minimalistic thrill of winning a couple of bucks on a scratch off card. Once we meet scratch card-crazy John, Rhodes switches the action to the office where John is a completely different guy. He’s level headed, an excellent employee and even a bit of a ladies man. The early establishment of his contradictory qualities makes John a likable yet pathetic character, which fuels the rest of the film.

Endangered Species: Las Vegas Struggles to Save the High-Rolling Whales

Las Vegas loves its losers -- especially well-heeled losers. In fact, Vegas so adores those high-flying gamblers with the means and the bad luck to blow staggering sums at the tables that the casinos have a nickname for them: "whales."

And the whales are prized commodities in Vegas. Casinos fly them in on private jets, put them up in mindblowing villas and provide them with personal chefs and doting butlers -- just so long as these deep-pocketed players are willing to put six figures at risk each time they visit.

Just a few years ago, Vegas was crowded with these massive free-spending players. But in the current economic climate, the highest rollers represent a thinned-out species. Even those whales still willing to risk princely sums are tighter with their chips than they used to be -- and they're getting selective about choosing a casino to go swimming in.

When Whales Attack

"When times were good, a gambler would come in for a weekend, win 50 grand on Friday night, and promptly piss it away. By the time he was ready to leave on Sunday, he owed us money," says Steve Cyr, senior director of player development at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and subject of Deke Castleman's Whale Hunt in the Desert, a Vegas confidential. "Now when some of the hundred-thousand-dollar players get a couple of scores, they stop playing and keep the money."

Great Hotels Cater to Families in Las Vegas

There are many fine hotels in Las Vegas to choose from, but parents traveling with the children are looking for a different kind of experience than the seasoned gambler. Luckily, there are several fine hotels in Las Vegas that cater to the younger crowd, ensuring that the entire family has a great time.
Circus, Circus is a great choice for a family vacation in Las Vegas. The facility is comprised of three towers with a connecting sky shuttle, viewed by most children as the first attraction. The Adventuredome inside the complex is the world’s largest indoor theme park, and a perfect destination for some fun with the children. Circus themed shows and wandering performers abound, and everyone will enjoy the miniature golf, bungee jumping and choice of over 200 carnival games. Of course, parents will enjoy the 100,000 square foot casino and great restaurants.
Another family oriented property in Las Vegas is the Excalibur. Designed to replicate King Arthur’s Camelot home, Excalibur gives children and experience similar to walking into a fairy tale. Families walk across the moat to enter the property, and every detail is charming. The first floor of the hotel is designed especially for kids, full of carnival games and arcades and themed entertainment. The large pool areas feature a waterfall and several waterslides, and a popular dinner attraction is the Tournament of Kings, a show with dragons, jousting, wizards and great food. The large, themed casino is a treat for parents, as are the other great restaurants on property.
Another exciting family hotel is the Luxor, an Egyptian Pyramid set down in Las Vegas. This great hotel is actually larger than the pyramids in Egypt and is guarded by an authentically styled Sphinx. The kids will enjoy the two story video arcade and IMAX theater. All of the rooms have sloped walls, inviting a geometry lesson, and furniture decorated with Egyptian symbols. Kids love exploring a recreation of King Tut’s Tomb and the accompanying museum, said to be quite authentic. There are five pools on site and a motion simulator ride with an Egyptian theme. Of course, a spacious casino and several spas join world class restaurants for the parents to enjoy.
If you’re traveling with younger children and need a little “alone” time, consider the Orleans Hotel. They’ve created a parent’s dream with Kids Tyme, an onsite daycare facility with an impressively large jungle gym, arts and crafts activities and movies. The center is open 7 days a week and serves children from 2 ½ years to 12 years old. Also on site is a huge bowling center with 70 lanes, an 18 theater movie complex and Tyme Out video arcade. The property also has a pool, spa and fitness center and a great showroom. Of course, the adjoining casino offers plenty of opportunity for the adults to enjoy themselves as well. Consider these fine hotels and make your next trip to Las Vegas a family affair. Everyone can have a great time in Vegas!
