Thermage for Acne

Overview

There are a growing number of innovative treatment options for skin conditions, including acne. In addition to conventional methods such as antibiotics and topical creams, acne sufferers can turn to more high-tech remedies such as the FDA-approved procedure known as Thermage. Thermage® is a registered trademark of Thermage Inc. of Hayward, California.

Considerations

Thermage acne treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses radio frequency technology. Although some Thermage patients have reported great results from this procedure, others say there was little if any noticeable improvement.

Effects

Thermage uses deep, uniform heating that reaches the innermost layers of the skin while guarding the outer layers with a cooling effect. This penetrating heat is designed to stimulate collagen, rejuvenate facial contours and have a tightening effect in the deeper layers of the skin. This can eventually lead to smoother, healthier skin and a softening of acne scars.

Procedure

As you prepare for Thermage, a paper transfer is used to reference the areas that require treatment. This grid helps ensure that problem areas receive more passes of the thermage device than healthier areas. You may also be given a local anesthetic to prevent any minor discomfort. The Thermage acne procedure can take up to two hours. There is no down time involved, so you're able to resume normal activities immediately.

Precautions

The results of Thermage depend to a certain extent on the competency of the operator. Therefore, the outcome of the treatment can be unpredictable. There is also the possibility of burning, discoloration and the formation of permanent hard spots on the skin.
